Guest speaker is Garry Reynolds & May Members Meeting

The May 2024 guest speaker is Garry Reynolds

The next Caloundra Family History Research group meeting will be held on Thursday, 16 May 2024 at 1:30 pm (Members’ Meeting follows at 2:30 pm). The guest speaker is Garry Reynolds: family historian, researcher, former teacher & public servant and author who will present “Station of the Cross”.

Garry Reynolds Garry has led an amazing life… far too much to tell here… so we urge you to join us to hear of his journey from high school teacher and shire councillor, to a career with all levels of government, as an advisor to leading businessman Gerry Harvey. He even resuscitated a 1959 honeymoon motel. All this led to a life-long passion for trains. So he completed an Honours Degree in Economic History at Sydney University specialising in railway history.

After surviving and rehabilitating from four strokes, Garry moved to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to family. Since then, he has used his public service experience in researching and writing to promote uplifting stories of active seniors. He is now moving into community youth support work through his church. Garry has published six history books and still publishes a regular free railway history online newsletter which goes to readers around the world.

Brutally honest history from Victorian England and Australia’s colonial past

Garry’s presentation “Station of the Cross” features some brutally honest history from Victorian England and Australia’s colonial past  – that is intertwined with his family history – concerning an amazing 140-year-old church in Canberra where Garry volunteered to conserve its Gothic sandstone beauty. Formerly a funeral train receiving station at Sydney’s Rookwood Necropolis– the largest Victorian-era cemetery still operating in the world. We will hear of body snatching and grave robbing and how this beautiful church ended up in Canberra.
