The speaker for our March 2019 General Meeting is Dr Ruth Kerr. She will be talking on mineral discoveries in Queensland with a particular focus on the Gympie gold field.
Dr Ruth Kerr, OAM, Adjunct Professor at the UQ School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, is an author and historian with a thorough knowledge and understanding of Queensland archival resources for historians.
She was awarded the John Douglas Kerr Medal of distinction in 2013 by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland and the Professional Historians Association (PHA). This 2013 article from the PHA e-Buttetin gives you a sense of the scope of Dr Kerr’s work, publications, teaching and contribution to advancing the knowledge of Queensland’s history.
On 14 June, in the Queen’s Birthday 1999 Honours List, Dr Ruth Kerr was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). This was awarded for service to the preservation of Australian history, particularly through the Royal Historical Society of Queensland.
The talk will discuss archival records on mineral discoveries and opening of Gympie goldfield. The purpose of this talk is to explain how researchers may discover the archival records pertaining to mineral discoveries in Queensland. It also focuses on the establishment of the Gympie Goldfield, the first significant gold rush in Queensland.
