Free Events for National Family History Month

National Family History Month August 2020

UPDATE: these events are now finished.

This August 2020 Caloundra Family History Research Inc will be celebrating National Family History Month. Even COVID-19, social distancing and restricted meeting sizes will not stop us finding ways to sharing our resources, research skills and enthusiasm for family history at this time.

We have planned two presentations using Zoom meetings where you can join from the safety of your home. Plus an opportunity to submit a question on your family history that our members will research for FREE and email you back the findings.*

1. Zoom Meeting: ”They weren’t all Lutheran” with Pauleen Cass

On Thursday 6 August 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm with the question and answer time after the presentation.

Pauleen Cass is a genealogist, historian, author and blogger with extensive family history research experience and German ancestry. At the end of the presentation, there will be time for questions and answers.

3. Submit a Family History Question

For National Family History Month we invite members of the public to submit a question on their family history. Then one or more of our experienced members will look at the question to see if they can answer it and supply some research based on the question. This research is planned for 15 August so questions need to be submitted as early as possible before 9 am, Monday 10 August.

You might have a question like, when did my great grandfather come to Australia? Or was my great grandmother really a convict? Where did my grandmother live in the UK? In what ship did my great grandparents voyage to Australia? What village did they live in?

To be successful answering your question our researchers need to focus on a unique person and event. You need to clearly state what you wish to discover such as a name, relationship, place or even an event.  Plus supply some information to get us started, so here are some guidelines:

Guidelines for Free Research

  • One free research request per person.
  • The request must clearly indicate the specific information/detail being sought.
  • The request must provide full details of facts already known on research to save time going over the same information.
  • Detailed information on the line you are seeking information is required. Information includes the date of birth and date of death of each individual mentioned (marriage date if relevant) and location of these events. A simple family tree with these details could also be included. (Print off this pedigree chart that will open in a new tab or window. Fill in the known details, scan or take a photo with your mobile and add it to your email. This will help ensure you have covered the detailed information.
  • Information relating to any births after 1920 will not enable any useful research because of the privacy restrictions, and any results would be very limited.  Details on names and birth dates prior to 1920 are requested.
  • Research cannot be done on adoptions.
  • DNA analysis or advice is excluded.
  • Research requests must be sent to hello@caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au by Monday, 10 August.
  • The request should include your name, address, phone number and email address.
  • The research will be given a time slot of 40 minutes.
  • Charges will apply to any follow-up requested.

  1. Are you going to record this zoom lecture? I work during the time you have the lectures. I would love to attend the one on DNA.

    1. Kim, We are not recording currently. If you are looking for great family history webinars check out https://familytreewebinars.com/. They have many free webinars and even the paid ones are sometimes free for the first week after the webinar. There are many knowledgable speakers on DNA including Diahan Southard, Blaine Bettinger, Roberta Estes and many others available to view. The topics go from easy to more technical. Also, there is a pile of webinars to help with DNA on MyHeritage. Most of these are free. Regards Fran (CFH Webmaster)
