Meet Shauna Hicks OAM – one of our new patrons
Shauna Hicks OAM has been tracing her own family history since 1977. She worked in government roles for over 35 years, primarily in libraries and archives. This included the State Library of Queensland, the John Oxley Library in Brisbane, the Queensland State Archives, the National Archives of Australia in Canberra and Public Record Office Victoria in Melbourne.
Shauna has several tertiary qualifications, including a Master of Arts in Australian Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in History and Anthropology, a Graduate Diploma in Library Science, and a Diploma in Family Historical Studies from the Society of Australian Genealogists. Currently a PhD candidate with Griffith University – The grass wasn’t always greener: immigrant struggles in colonial Queensland with a focus on Irish and Scots female immigrants.
She is a Fellow of the Queensland Family History Society; a recipient of the Australian Society of Archivists Distinguished Achievement Award and the Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations Services to Family History Award. Shauna was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to community history in June 2024.
Drawing on both formal study and hands-on experience in family history research, she regularly speaks at genealogy expos and conferences and has authored several family history guides.
Since 2009, when she established her research and consultancy business, Shauna Hicks History Enterprises, she has undertaken research for both private and corporate clients along with speaking & workshop events.
